Two courts in one city

333 South 200 East is the city court. State Street is the county court.

Salt Lake City Justice Court sits at the John L. Baxter Courthouse, 333 South 200 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84111. Utah Courts and the city both list that address. City DUI cases filed in Salt Lake City are heard here. It is the municipal court. It is a different court from Salt Lake County Justice Court, even though both buildings are in Salt Lake City.

Utah Courts lists Salt Lake County Justice Court at 2001 South State Street, Suite S4-300, in the South Building on the fourth floor, Salt Lake City, UT 84114. The county describes the same suite as the court entrance for payments inside the Salt Lake County Government Center. If the notice prints a different address, use the notice. A stop on a Salt Lake City street does not tell you which of these two captions you have. The court name on the citation does.

Most first-offense DUIs in Utah are Class B misdemeanors handled in justice court. Both of these courts hear that level of case for the territory each one covers. A DUI charged more seriously, including where there is a prior DUI, an injury, or a child in the car, can be filed in district court instead. Dallin reads the charging document before he tells you which courthouse has the file.

The city court

333 South 200 East means Salt Lake City Justice Court

If that is the court address, you are at the John L. Baxter Courthouse. The county court on State Street is a different calendar. Use the court named on the citation, then the address printed on the notice.

The hearing

City DUI arraignments are online via Webex

Salt Lake City says a DUI arraignment is set 14 days from the violation, at 10:00 a.m., or the next business day if that date falls on a weekend or holiday. Those arraignments are held online via Webex. If you cannot connect online, the court has computers at 333 South 200 East. The notice controls.

County court, and everyone else

South Jordan is the county court. Murray, Sandy, and the rest are not.

Salt Lake County says its justice court covers unincorporated Salt Lake County, plus Emigration Canyon, Magna, Kearns, White City, Copperton, and South Jordan. The county says that as of July 1, 2026, South Jordan cases are handled at Salt Lake County Justice Court. South Jordan says its own justice court is permanently closed as of that date and sends those cases to 2001 South State Street, Suite S4-300. If the notice prints a different address, use the notice.

Other cities in Salt Lake County run justice courts of their own. Utah Courts lists Sandy Justice Court at 210 West Sego Lily Drive and Holladay Justice Court at 4580 South 2300 East. The Utah Courts shared-court table sends Cottonwood Heights filings to Holladay. Utah Courts' email filing list for Salt Lake County also gives separate justice-court contacts for Murray, West Valley, West Jordan, Taylorsville, Draper, Midvale, South Salt Lake, Riverton, Herriman, Bluffdale, and Alta. This page does not give those street addresses. Check the court on your citation, then the address on the notice.

A case near the Davis County line can be North Salt Lake Justice Court instead. That is a different city and a different page. Most first-offense DUIs in Utah are Class B misdemeanors handled in justice court, and a more serious charge can be filed in district court. The charging paper says which.

What arraignment is for

The first setting introduces the charge. It does not finish it.

Show up for the court named on the notice, in the format that notice describes.

  1. Match the notice to the court name

Salt Lake City Justice Court should name 333 South 200 East when the date is in that building. Salt Lake County Justice Court should name 2001 South State Street, Suite S4-300. A Sandy, Holladay, or other city caption is neither of those calendars. If the notice prints a different address, use the notice.

  2. You are told the charge and your rights

The court advises you of the accusation and of the right to counsel. A common path is to plead not guilty, or to ask for time to hire a lawyer, and to come back when the defense is actually underway. Salt Lake City asks people who already have a lawyer to contact that lawyer about the hearing.

  3. Ask how that date is being held

Salt Lake City holds DUI arraignments online via Webex and publishes Webex links for other calendars. Dallin prefers online hearings, and many clients join from work instead of taking the morning off. If the court wants you in the room, the notice will say so, and it will give the address. For the county court, the notice is the check.

Online is still court

A video hearing is not a phone call you take from the car.

Salt Lake City holds DUI arraignments online via Webex. Treat the link like a courtroom: be somewhere quiet, be on time, and have the citation with you. Dallin prefers online hearings and goes over the login before the date so you are not guessing while a judge is waiting. If you cannot connect online, the city has computers at 333 South 200 East. A Salt Lake County Justice Court date uses the format and the address on that notice. The county points people to the Utah Courts calendar for the hearing.

Dallin is a solo attorney based in Saratoga Springs, where he lives and works. The consultation is free. Call or text (435) 294-6806. Client meetings are usually by phone or video, and in person only by request. Utah's driver-license process runs separately, on a short timeline of its own. He will tell you what in the paperwork relates to that, as well as the court date.

How a case is prepared after the first call is on the DUI practice page. If you would rather write than call, use the contact page.
